Matthew Clark

General Surgeon

"I choose to share what I’ve gained from my extraordinary opportunities as a surgeon, teacher, and leader to improve the wellbeing of individuals and our community, with optimism and humour."

Matt is a highly experienced General Surgeon with a deep commitment to quality, training, and equitable care. He continues to serve in both the public and private sectors, balancing his work on the elective and emergency general surgery service at Middlemore Hospital with his private practice.

Passionate about education, Matt is an active teacher and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Auckland. In 2024, he was elected to the Council of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), one of only four New Zealanders in this leadership position. He previously served nine years on the Court of Examiners and concluded his tenure as Chief Examiner in General Surgery for RACS NZ.

Matt also contributed to system-wide healthcare improvement during his time as Chief Medical Officer for Southern Cross Healthcare, guiding the organisation through the challenges of the Covid-19 era.

Approachable and non-judgmental, Matt is a strong ally to the LGBTI+ community and an advocate for equity in Aotearoa. He welcomes patients seeking second opinions and is committed to connecting individuals with the right expertise when needed.
