Orbera® managed weight loss system

The Orbera® Managed Weight Loss Program is a unique and effective, non-surgical weight loss program recommended by The American Gastroenterology Association (2021).

The combination of the Orbera® intragastric balloon and a support program can assist in achieving your weight loss goals. Orbera® is indicated for people with a BMI of 27 and above, between the ages of 18-70 years.

What is a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon is a non-surgical and short-term weight loss device. A smooth, soft saline-filled balloon (about the size of a grapefruit) is placed in your stomach, allowing you to control your portion sizes by filling space in your stomach. By following professional health and wellness advice, you can adopt good healthy eating habits and change your lifestyle so you can lose weight quickly and keep it off long term.

How much weight can I lose with Orbera®?

As Orbera® helps you feel full more quickly, and provided you follow the program correctly, expected weight loss is up to 15-20kg’s in 6 months.

The Orbera® clinical study has shown that weight loss varies from person to person. It is important to understand that the balloon is a tool to aid weight loss and must be used in conjunction with diet, exercise, and a behaviour modification program.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is performed via a gastroscopy whilst you are sedated. The deflated gastric balloon is inserted via the mouth through the oesophagus and into the stomach. The balloon is very small when deflated and is easily placed. Once in the correct position, a syringe is used to fill the balloon with a safe sterile saline solution of approximately 450-700mls. This entire process takes about 20 minutes.

How long does it take to recover after the procedure?

You will be monitored in recovery for up to 2 hours after the procedure. Once discharged, you are advised to plan at least three days of inactivity to recover from the procedure.  Returning to normal activity depends on how quickly you adjust to the balloon. You may experience some nausea or vomiting for a few days after the procedure but your Endoscopist can prescribe medication to proactively manage these symptoms.

Removing the balloon

Once the balloon is ready to be removed, a gastroscopy is performed to easily deflate and remove the balloon. This is very similar to the placement process, only taking 20 minutes.

How it works

  1. Consultation with Endoscopist to discuss options and the right balloon for you to achieve the best results.
  2. Procedure takes place at Franklin Hospital where the balloon is inserted in a simple day-stay procedure.
  3. Lifestyle changes with ongoing support from our weight loss dietitian who advises you on healthy eating.
